10/12/11 GATESHEAD HC 14 HUDDERSFIELD HC 3
Gateshead finished for the winter mid-season break with another emphatic victory, as they beat Huddersfield for the second time this season. Gateshead will not only savour their result on Saturday but Lincoln Roses draw with Durham City means Gateshead go into the winter break on top of the league by one point and 22 goals better off than Lincoln. Gateshead are notoriously slow starters but not on Saturday, as within a minute they had taken the lead. Right from the off Gateshead chased the ball down and White stole the ball from the Huddersfield defence. White off loaded the ball to Hardy, who in turn fed Traynor at the top of the “D”, and with one touch he slapped the ball into the Huddersfield net. Hardy scored a brace to put Gateshead 3-0 up within another few minutes. Both goals came from neat play into White who passed the ball across the Huddersfield goal line for Hardy to finish coolly. If Huddersfield thought that Gateshead were going to ease off they were wrong, as Bland smashed in a 4th from the top of the “D” and Traynor picked up another hat-trick, with a drag-flick from a penalty corner and when he rounded the sliding Huddersfield keeper King to slot the ball home. Huddersfield wouldn’t have believed that they would have been satisfied going in at half-time 6-0 down, but by the time the half-time whistle sounded they would have been, as Gateshead had added four more with Huddersfield only being able to find the net once themselves. Fleming got the 7th when Traynor found him after receiving a long corner and he in turn crashed the ball into the Huddersfield netting. A high Collins drag-flick got the 8th, Bland added the 9th after his first shot was saved and Hardy picked up his hat-trick, shortly after making the miss of the season from 2 feet out. So as both teams went in for their half-time team talks, Gateshead were nine goals ahead with the game at 10-1. Many teams would lie down at this point but in fairness to Huddersfield they ran their hearts out in the 2nd half and the damage wasn’t quite as bad. Gateshead were limited to just the four goals and Huddersfield got another two themselves. It took Gateshead almost 15minutes into the 2nd half to get their next goal as they missed various chances. When they did get the break through it was from a penalty corner switch left, when Honour hurled the ball into the path of Fleming, who deflected the ball high past King into his goal. Collins got another goal from an identical drag-flick to the one he produced in the 1st half. Again he flicked the ball right into the top right corner of the net, leaving King and his defender on the line with no chance. Traynor and Hardy got their 4th goals of the game; Traynor’s from a penalty corner switch right and Hardy’s with a shot that King nearly kept out. The last play of the game ended with Mathard getting his 2nd for Huddersfield, as his skewed shot bounced and spun between the legs of Gateshead’s diving keeper McEwen. Although this was not enough to make the day any more enjoyable for Huddersfield; as the game ended 14-3. Gateshead can now enjoy the festive period safe in the knowledge that the league title sits within their hands, though the season still has a long way to go. Huddersfield still keep 4th spot in the league but have a very tough game in the New Year against 3rd place Harrogate at home.
