19/11/11 Gateshead 6 Leeds Adel Carnegie 3
A second home game in a row saw league leaders Gateshead meet out of form Leeds Adel Carnegie. Gateshead ran out 6-3 winners in a comfortable, if not impressive display, all but ending the game with five goals in the first half.
Leeds came into this game after losing three games on the trot, while Gateshead on the other hand had won their last six. As Leeds started the game off they soon found that they would be yet again coming away without any points. Gateshead started the first half very strongly, dominating the opening play and forcing Leeds deeper and deeper into their own half. Reward came early for this pressure as Chris Traynor dispatched a neat drag-flick from a penalty corner.
Gateshead continued where they left off but were caught napping at the back when Leeds took a quick sideline hit on the right-hand side of the pitch and found a free player standing in the Gateshead “D”. After a slick one two around keeper McEwen Staunton-Sykes slapped the ball into the back of the net to level the scores.
Leeds fight back was short lived and Gateshead hit straight back through Traynor again. This time Collinson picked up the ball just outside the Leeds 25 yard line and drove to the baseline and round the back of the Leeds defence. After beating several players he pushed the ball across the face of the net for Traynor to come charging in and grab his second.
This time Leeds had no reply and Gateshead, although losing the influential Ramsay due to injury, put themselves 5-1 clear.
The first of these came from a simple tap in from Collins after a series of good link up play from Traynor, Carruthers and White, from a long corner. That goal was followed quickly by a goal from Carruthers himself after he slapped a precision shot into the bottom corner of the net. To finish off the Gateshead scoring in the first half Traynor once again slotted in a drag-flick, this one high into the top right of the Leeds goal.
Leeds did well not to completely collapse and even got a goal back before the half time whistle, once again catching the Gateshead defence asleep, as Hemming stole in and deflected the ball past McEwen at his near post.
The second half was relatively flat compared to the goal soaked first half. Gateshead again dominated the play but failed to find the net with most of their attempts and Leeds failed to make much of an impression themselves.
Though it was Leeds who found the net first, after winning the opening penalty corner of the second half. It was a well taken routine, with the ball being played to the penalty spot by Maver, where it was stopped for him to come in a finish it off with a flick high into the Gateshead net.
Although pulling Gateshead’s lead back to just two, Leeds never really managed to threaten a comeback and Traynor not satisfied with a hat-trick wrapped up the game with his fourth. Williamson broke down the right flank with the ball and found Traynor standing at the top of the “D”, ready to flick the ball on the move into the Leeds goal.
Leeds will somehow need to find some form next weekend against Sunderland, as they continue to slip further down the league table. Gateshead travel to Doncaster themselves, who will be no push over, buoyed by an impressive draw against Harrogate.
