3/12/11 GATESHEAD HC 11 DURHAM CITY HC 1
After losing the top spot in the league last week with a defeat to Doncaster, Gateshead got back into winning ways with an 11-1 drubbing of Durham City.
Durham City have been somewhat of a bogey team for Gateshead in the past, and have often come away from games with at least a point. However on Saturday Durham were unable to take any points back home as Gateshead made a point that they are still not out of the league race just yet. Gateshead had a few players available again who missed last week’s game and the difference was noticeable; Chris Traynor netted 6 times to take his league tally for the season to an impressive 19.
Gateshead as usual were a bit sluggish from the off, but soon found their feet and rhythm. Gateshead moved the ball around well, carving the Durham defence open time and time again, but it wasn’t until midway through the first half that they were able to find the back of the net. Fleming opened the scoring for the day with a slap hit from the top of the “D”, after being found unmarked by White.
Gateshead carried the momentum forward and soon got a second when Grant fed Traynor to get his first of the day.
The trend continued when Collins executed a smart drag-flick from a penalty corner and Carruthers flicked the ball past the Durham keeper, so by half time Gateshead were 4-0 ahead and looking comfortable.
In the past Gateshead could be criticized of not finishing teams off but today this defiantly could not be said.
Again for the start of the second half Gateshead dominated but failed to find the back of the net, but when Traynor did so the flood gates opened and it wasn’t long before Traynor had added another 3 to put Gateshead 8-0 ahead.
The only blemish on the day for Gateshead came when an error at the back let Potts get a conciliation goal. Gorman when taking a side line hit had a moment of misjudgement and played the ball to Collins, who was nearly standing on his own goal line. Unfortunately for Collins the ball was at knee height and as he miscontrolled the ball it spilled out to Potts who calmly hit the ball into the bottom of McEwen’s goal.
Gateshead got back into their scoring ways when Carruthers knocked in a rebound of the Durham keeper and when Collins drag-flicked a penalty corner wide, Fleming was on hand to react quickly and steer it back on course into the Durham goal.
However the day was rounded up by the prolific Chris Traynor, when he made it 11-1 from a drag-flicked penalty corner and bagged himself a double hat-trick in the process.
Next Saturday Gateshead face Huddersfield at home, to finish off the 1st half of the season. They will want another repeat performance and set themselves up nicely to push on in the second half of the season.
